It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Zelia Bettencourt on October 6, 2026, at the age of 79.
Born on January 19, 1947, in Rabo de Peixe, on the beautiful island of São Miguel in the Azores, Portugal, Zelia’s life would take her far from her birthplace. In May 1972, she married her beloved husband, Inocencio. Their journey together took them to Bermuda and then to Fall River, Massachusetts, before they moved to Canada in 1974 and settled directly in Brampton. There, they built their home and a life centered on family, love and community.
Zelia was a warm, kind and loving woman who would do anything for anyone. Her generosity and caring nature touched the lives of those around her, and she will be remembered for the love she gave so freely and the quiet way she made others feel welcome and cared for.
Zelia’s faith was an important part of her life, providing a source of strength, comfort and guidance throughout her journey. This was reflected in the kindness she showed others, her generosity of spirit and the love she had for her family. It remained a meaningful part of who she was and the life she lived.
Family was always at the heart of Zelia’s world. She especially loved the holidays, with Christmas holding a very special place in her heart. Bringing family together, sharing a home-cooked meal and enjoying precious time with loved ones were among her greatest joys. These gatherings created memories that her family will cherish for years to come.
Zelia found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. She loved cooking, tending to her garden and spending time with her beloved pet cats. It was these everyday moments, shared with the people and animals she loved, that reflected the caring and gentle person she was.
Zelia leaves behind her loving daughter, Alexandra (Jack), and her extended family, including her brothers, Eduardo (Marieta) and Donald (Marcia); and her sisters, Connie (Carlos), and Philomena (David).
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Inocencio, and her sister, Margaret (Douglas).
Although Zelia’s sudden passing leaves a deep sadness in the hearts of those who loved her, the memories she created, the traditions she cherished and the kindness she showed will live on. She will be remembered always for her loving heart, her generosity, her faith and her unwavering devotion to family.

May she rest in the loving arms of God, forever loved and never forgotten.
