Passed away peacefully at his home, Erin Mills Lodge, Mississauga on September 17, 2012 at the age of 93 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s. Beloved husband for 63 years of the late Eileen Thistle. Loving Father of Barbara and her husband Wayne Tucker, David and his wife Susanne Thistle, Stephen and his wife Ruth Thistle. Proud Grandpa of Adam (Lindsay), Christopher (Amy), Sarah (David), Heather, Kathleen, Bill (Ali) and Laura. Dearest Great Grandpa of Quinn and Henry. Survived by his sisters-in-law Lynn and Arlene Gowland, sister Emma Byrne, brother Max Coles and brother in law George Mrazik. Bill served as a navigator in the RAF from 1939 until 1945. He served in England, India and Burma. He was commissioned as a Flying Officer, dropping supplies behind enemy lines. He was an active community leader, involved with the Westway United Church and the United Way. For many years he coached baseball and hockey, was a Scout leader and President of the Etobicoke Optimist Club. Dad will always be fondly remembered for his steadfast commitment to the welfare of his family and his great sense of humour. Friends will be received on Thursday October 4, 2012 at the Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Road, Weston Ontario (north of Lawrence Avenue) from 10:30 – 11:30 am. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at 11:30 am followed by a reception at the funeral home. Memorial Donations to the CNIB would be appreciated by the family.
