Kitchen, Vida Alice (née Adams)
RCAF Veteran of World War II
Peacefully passed away at Sunnybrook Hospital Veterans Wing on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 in her 105th year.
Predeceased by her husband Ronald Kitchen in 2016. Loving mother of Gayle Edward and Alan Kitchen. Cherished grandmother of Dan (De), Catherine (Simon), and Graham (Simona). Beloved great-grandmother of Lincoln, Naryiah, and Lilia. She will be greatly missed by her sister-in-law Verna Peterson (Nelson), and her Kitchen in-laws: Sharen (Joe), Morley and Carol, and Howard and Athelia. She also leaves behind several cousins, including Iris Brett and Thelma Sullivan, many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
Vida was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her parents, Llewellyn and Hannah (Annie) Rose Mercer, and by her siblings: Elizabeth, Violet (Harold Moray), Arthur, James (Jean Parnell, Helen), Nelson (Jean Burnham), Thelma (Arthur Sadler), and Hilda (Edgar Hanlan).
Vida was proud of her Newfoundland roots and the opportunity to visit Arnold's Cove every summer in her childhood. It was her great joy to return many times later in life, especially with her siblings Thelma, Violet, and Nelson. She was also a proud veteran of the RCAF, stationed in Paulson, Manitoba. She was an elementary school teacher with York District Board, and later worked in the York library system. But nothing made her more proud than her family and close loved ones, with whom she shared joy, laughter, love, wisdom, and companionship. Vida had the unique ability to connect with many different people and always made them feel important; they knew she appreciated their time together. The world is a better place because of the spirit Vida brought into it. Vida's family want to especially thank Sunnybrook Hospital Veterans Centre for their care, attention, and companionship.
A funeral service will be held at the Sunnybrook Hospital (2075 Bayview Ave, Toronto) in the Veterans Chapel on Monday, November 3, 2025 at 11am. Interment to follow at St. Philip’s Anglican Church Cemetery.
