Sebastiano (Sam) Basso

January 5, 1933 - December 23, 2023



It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sebastiano (Sam or Tiano) on December 23, 2023 at the age of 90. Beloved husband of over 66 years to Angela, loving father to Diana (Rico) and Nancy, dear Nonno to Michael (Alessandra) and Andrew and Bisnonno to Sebastian.

Sam immigrated to Toronto from Tiezzo, Pordenone, Italy at the age of 18, disembarked in Halifax and made his way to Toronto. In Toronto, although it was not an easy start, his life flourished personally and professionally. Sam met his wife Angelina, married, started a plastering business, had his daughters, bought a house, decided to sell his business, started a new profession as a builder, and enjoyed his grandkids. Dotted in between all these big milestones of life, there were numerous experiences, mini-milestones, memories and laughter. He would always say “I joke to keep my sanity” as he rubbed his hands together in excitement. Even though his education was limited in Italy, Sam’s mathematical and financial skills and his love of numbers was second to none even well into his later years, he could eyeball a room and know the dimensions, square footage, and cost in a matter of minutes. His passion was his family, friends and, of course, his properties which up until recently, he would drive around to ensure they were properly maintained. Sam was well-respected, wise, fair, thoughtful, kind, giving and always tried to ensure people were at ease with his light-hearted jests and wit. Sam, the husband, father, Nonno, Bis-nonno, brother, and friend will be greatly missed.
