Our father was born on November 4,1935 in the mulino in the small town of Bannia in the province of Fruili, Italy to the parents of Rita Mio (nee Morson) and Olivo “Giovanni” Mio. He emigrated to Canada in August of 1956 and met my mom, Aintzane (nee Ormaechea) in May of 1959. They married on June 17, 1961. They had three children, John, Richard (married Lisa Wright, his favorite daughter in law, in 1989) and Vivian. Eventually they became grandparents to Corey, Ali, Matthew, Teyana, Skye, Lorea and Catriona, and great grandparents to Luken. My father established a carpentry contracting company until his retirement. He was proud that he helped build a part of the GTA. But he was more than that. He gardened flowers, fruits and vegetables at the family home. He was also a jack of all trades – electrician, plumber, bricklayer, a winemaker, and deli meat maker. His liqueurs were amazing. His greatest legacy is the Banniot – Italian – English dictionary that he authored. It has sold around the world and is now catalogued in the library of the University of Friuli. Sadly he passed away the morning of July 13, 2026. He was loved by many who knew him. He will be missed.
If desired, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
