In loving memory of Maria Makris (October 19, 1938 – February 5, 2026)Maria Makris (née Kotsiras), aged 87, passed away on February 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving children, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Born in Pyrgos, Elias, Greece, Maria was the daughter of Tasia and Ioannis, and one of five siblings. From an early age, she learned the values of resilience, sacrifice, and devotion, qualities that defined her life. In 1968, Maria immigrated to Canada with courage, determination, and a strong work ethic. It was in Canada that she met her beloved husband, Andreas Makris. Together for 37 years, they built a life rooted in hard work and a strong commitment to family. Maria devoted most of her life to being a homemaker, focusing on maintaining her home and raising her family. A talented baker and former pastry chef in Greece, her home was always rich with the aromas of τσουρέκι, κουραμπιέδες, κουλούρια, and μελομακάρονα. She later brought that same dedication and pride to her work at Mr. Goudas. In 2012,
Maria was diagnosed with breast cancer, and with the same strength and determination that defined her life, she courageously fought and beat it.Maria was a devoted mother to her children, Bill, Victoria, and Ioanna, and a proud Γιαγιά to Sophia, Samantha, Christina, Mia, and Andreas. In recent years, she was blessed to become a Προ-γιαγιά to Eden, Lilly Mae, and Niko. Her love extended beyond blood, embracing her step-grandson Christian and step-great-grandchildren Nora and Ezra.Above all, Maria’s family was her greatest joy and life’s purpose.
She will be remembered as a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, godmother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend. Ο Θεός να ευλογεί και να αναπαύει την ψυχή σου. Σε αγαπάμε και μας λείπεις με όλη μας την καρδιά.
