It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Maria Filomena Camara Cabral, who left us peacefully on August 31, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.
Filomena was born on December 15, 1961, in Ribeirinha, São Miguel, Azores, to Maria do Rosário de Fátima Guedes Camara Cabral and Mariano Manuel Pimentel Cabral.
She was predeceased by her brother, Luís Humberto. She leaves behind her brothers, Mariano and Joseph (Sayuri), and her sisters, Maria Eliza and Sanza (José). She will be forever loved and remembered by her nieces and nephews, Ana, Cristina (David), Elizabeth (Kevin), Catherine (Michael), Sasha (Colan), Chloe (Rafi), Kaia (Callum), and Elijah, and by her great-nieces and great-nephews, Julia, Lucas, Savanah, River, Maelle, and Carys, each of whom brought so much happiness and pride into her life.
To those who knew and loved her best, she was simply Mena.
Mena's life was centered around the people she loved. Family was not just important to her, it was a part of who she was. She loved deeply, cared selflessly, and gave so much of herself to those around her. She was someone you could count on, someone whose love was shown through the countless little things she did every day, often without ever expecting anything in return.
One of the greatest examples of that love was the devotion she showed to her beloved mother. For many years, Mena dedicated herself to caring for her with extraordinary patience, tenderness, and compassion. She was there through the difficult days and the quiet ones, giving her time, her strength, and her heart. It was simply who Mena was. When someone she loved needed her, she was there.
Her faith was also a deeply important part of her life. Mena loved the Church and found great joy in singing with the choir. Her faith brought her comfort and strength, and music brought her happiness. She loved classical music and especially treasured the music of her Portuguese homeland, songs and melodies that connected her to the Azores, to her heritage, and to the place where her story began.
She also knew how to find happiness in life's simple pleasures.
Mena loved going to the theatre and attending a good concert. She loved being together with family, laughing, talking, and enjoying each other's company. She could become wonderfully competitive over a game of Uno, creating the kind of moments that seemed ordinary at the time but that we now know will become some of our most treasured memories.
And then there were the pastries.
Mena had a well-known weakness for something sweet, and few things could compete with a good pastry, although strawberry shortcake always held a particularly special place in her heart. It is impossible to think about these little things now without smiling, because they were part of what made Mena, Mena.
There are so many things we will miss.
We will miss her presence at family gatherings. We will miss hearing her voice and her laughter. We will miss the conversations, the music, the games of Uno, the celebrations, and all of those small, everyday moments that we never imagined would one day become precious memories.
Most of all, we will miss simply knowing that she was there.
Mena was a bright light within our family. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a great-aunt, and so much more to the people fortunate enough to know her. She gave us a lifetime of memories, but more importantly, she gave us her love.
Losing her has left an emptiness that words cannot adequately describe. We wish we could have been given more time, more birthdays, more holidays, more family dinners, more concerts, more laughter, and even one more game of Uno.
But alongside the heartbreak is an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
We are grateful that she was ours.
Grateful for the years we shared with her. Grateful for everything she did for our family. Grateful for the love and devotion she gave so freely. Grateful for every laugh, every conversation, every celebration, every ordinary afternoon, and every memory that we will now carry with us for the rest of our lives.
Although Mena is no longer here for us to hold, the love she gave us remains. We will find her in the music she loved, in the traditions she cherished, in the family she helped hold together, and in the stories we will continue to tell about her for generations to come.
Her life mattered deeply.
She was loved beyond words, and she will be missed beyond measure.
Rest peacefully, our beautiful Mena.
Thank you for loving us, for caring for us, and for giving so much of yourself to our family. We will carry you with us wherever we go.
Until we meet again, you will remain forever loved, forever remembered, and forever in our hearts.
For those who wish, memorial donations would be welcomed by the family to the Canadian Cancer Society. If you would like a card placed with the family acknowledging your donation, please contact the funeral home.
