Margaret McCallion

MARGARET (MAGGIE) MAXWELL MCCALLION (nee STEWART) 1947 - 2013 Maggie was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland to Jim and Anne Stewart and immigrated to Canada in 1973 with her young family. Maggie passed away peacefully at home in Brampton after a long and courageous battle with cancer on February 1st. Maggie is survived by her husband Alexander, children Karen, Cathy (Jim) and Stewart (Monika), grandchildren Alex, Liam, Conor, Max and Amilie, her brother Maurice (Jayne) in Guernsey and extended family in the UK and Ireland. Maggie attended Bloomfield Collegiate School in Belfast before studying at the Queen's University of Belfast where she was active in the student union and student politics in the mid 1960's. After arriving in Canada, Maggie returned to study at York University. While lovingly raising her three children, Maggie was an active member of the community. She was President of the Brampton YMCA, on the Brampton Hydro Commission, and she ran for Brampton South in the 1990 provincial election. In addition, she was a member of the Municipal Electrical Association and served on the Ontario Board of Parole. Most recently, Maggie was an executive of the Brampton Chapter of the Sophisticated Ladies under Tremendous Stress. Maggie was passionate about politics, the arts and travel, only exceeded by her love for her family and friends; she enjoyed a lively conversation and debate, frequently arguing as the devil's advocate. Her presence at social gatherings was always conspicuous, often embraced and sometimes feared. She will be dearly missed. The family would like to extend a sincerest and heartfelt thanks to all the close friends who have supported and encouraged Maggie in her final years, and for the wonderful care of the staff at the Brampton Civic Hospital, Drs. Balcewicz, Kivlichan, Maynard and Sun, and Nurses Pringle and MacLennan. A reception for Maggie will be held at Terrace on the Green in Brampton on February 4th between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Brampton Civic Hospital.
