Manfred Ewald Dorn, a beloved husband, devoted father, and cherished Opa, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, at Bethell Hospice, after a courageous three-month battle with cancer. Born on September 15, 1940, in Hassenhausen, Germany, Manfred was the third of eight children born to Johannes and Ilse Dorn.
From a young age, Manfred exhibited a strong work ethic, starting his career in the copper and coal industry as a miner at just 16 years old in East Germany. In 1961, he made a move to West Germany, where he continued to work in the mining sector. Later, he pursued a new path as a Master Butcher in Westerland-Sylt, located in the North Sea.
In 1971, Manfred took a significant step towards a new life when he arrived in Grande Prairie, Alberta. His journey eventually brought him to Toronto, where he met and became engaged to his beloved wife, Mary, during Christmas of 1971 and marrying in July of 1972. They have celebrated 52 years of their love, embarking on many adventures together.
Manfred enjoyed the simple things in life, he was content with a good book on a sunny day or a cup of coffee in his garden and spending time with his family over a good meal. Manfred was a devoted father who shared his love of life, knowledge, and passion for sports with his son. As a family they often traveled and shared many experiences together – memories that will last a lifetime.
Manfred retired in 2015, after a fulfilling career that spanned decades in the food industry. He was an avid collector, a passion that brought him true joy. He also loved sports, especially soccer, reading and being an Opa to “his boys”. After retirement, he appreciated the opportunity to continue to travel with Mary, creating lasting memories with the love of his life. Annual visits to his large family in Germany were times Manfred cherished. Along the way Manfred enjoyed good times as well as a good beer. Prost Manny!
Manfred was a quiet man, but had a strong presence, he was always willing to help and was a friend to many. He is survived by his wife Mary, son Torben (Sara Laberge), grandsons Tobias and Mathis, who will carry forward his legacy. In Germany, he is survived by his sister Nori (Lothar), brothers Wolfgang (Christel) and Udo. Manfred will also be missed by his brother-in-law John Zauerhagen (Bonnie) and family.
Manfred’s memory will be honored during a visitation on June 7, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 AM, at the Ward Funeral Home - Weston Chapel in Toronto. The burial will follow at Sanctuary Park Cemetery at 11:45 AM, with a reception following from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at The Ward Funeral Home.
Manfred will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Ruhe in Friede!
