Kenneth Patrick “Kenny” Hughes, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, in Mississauga, Ontario. Born on January 6, 1936, in Motherwell, Scotland, Kenny lived a full and vibrant life marked by devotion to family, faith, and friendship.
Kenny was the beloved husband of Catherine Hughes (née Quinn), with whom he shared 61 cherished years of marriage. Their bond was one of deep love and companionship, enriched by shared adventures and a mutual dedication to their family. Together they raised four children: Stephen (Lori), Claire, Maureen (James), and Paul (Maralee). Kenny took immense pride in his role as a father and found great joy in watching his family grow. He will be dearly missed by his seven grandchildren—Emma, Kelsey, Connor, Ashlyn, Aidan, Rachel, and Gareth—each of whom held a special place in his heart.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Catherine; Rosemary and William McAllister; Joseph Quinn; and Kathleen Quinn.
Kenny had a zest for life that was evident in everything he did. An avid tennis player for many years at the Brampton Tennis Club, he delighted in teaching the game to his grandchildren—a legacy of skill and sportsmanship passed down through generations. In later years, he took up golf with enthusiasm, enjoying the camaraderie and quiet challenge of the sport.
Travel was another passion Kenny shared with Catherine. Their journeys took them far and wide—including memorable choir trips that brought them to places like The Vatican—experiences that blended their love for music, faith, and each other.
A man of deep faith and commitment to community service, Kenny served faithfully as an usher at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church for countless years. His presence at the church was not only a reflection of his devotion but also an extension of his warm personality—always ready with a smile or a story for those around him.
Known for his quick wit and endless trove of stories (and jokes), Kenny had an extraordinary ability to connect with people. He made friends wherever he went and left lasting impressions through kindness and humor. His love for family was unwavering; even during difficult times following Catherine’s passing, he remained a source of strength and warmth.
As those who knew him reflect on his life—a life filled with laughter, resilience, generosity, and love—they are reminded of the many ways Kenny touched their hearts.
May he rest in peace alongside Catherine once more. His memory will continue to bring comfort and inspiration to all who knew him.
The Hughes family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff and nurses at Sunrise of Erin Mills for the compassionate care and support you provided to our dad over the past year. He truly appreciated your dedication, and we are deeply grateful for the kindness and respect you showed him throughout his time with you.
A visitation to celebrate Ken’s life and faith will be held on Wednesday, June 4, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Ward Funeral Home, 52 Main Street South, Brampton.
A Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 940 North Park Drive, Brampton. Ken will be laid to rest at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 6933 Tomken Rd, Mississauga.
Following the service, all are welcome to join the family and friends for a reception at Glencairn Golf Club, 9807 Regional Road 25, Milton.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society, in Ken’s memory.
