Born January 16, 1935, in Toronto, the eldest child of Dorothy H. McGaw (née Stapells) and Albert Fairchild McGaw, Judy passed away peacefully on May 2, 2025, in her beloved hometown.
She attended Bishop Strachan School and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1956. During her ti me at U of T, she was a proud member of the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity. That same year, she married the love of her life, William J. Lind (fondly known as Billy—or, aff ecti onately, “Darling Asshole”). They remained happily married unti l his passing in April 2012. Together they built a vibrant life fi lled with family, friends, laughter, travel, golf, and more than a few unforgett able parti es. Their favourite places included Envoy Point, Florida, and many magical years at “The Mousetrap” and later “On the Rocks” in the family’s beloved Muskoka.
Her children, Dave (Lynn) and Kelly (Vance), were her greatest pride, along with her wonderful grandchildren: Kirsty, Ryan, and the late Allie (deceased 2023), whom she missed deeply.
She is lovingly remembered by her brother Chuck McGaw (Linda), her sister Jane Jones, and was predeceased by her brother Pete McGaw (Fiona). She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who were dear to her, near and far.
In the 70s, Judy found purpose and fulfillment volunteering with youth in the juvenile court system, mentoring teens through the provincial courts in the GTA. The work was both demanding and deeply rewarding— luckily, her own kids (just barely) managed to avoid the system through their youth!
Mom then worked with and “managed” Bill along with the office and books as he ran Dental-ez in Canada while also running Lind Equipment which had it’s origins in industrial lighting, run by our Gran, Joyce Lind.
An avid golfer and curler, Judy was a fixture at the Thornhill Country Club (TCC), where she played in numerous district tournaments. She served as President of the York District and made history as TCC’s fi rst female Club President—an inspiring fi rst in golf and club leadership circles. In honour of this trailblazing role, and as part of the Club’s 100th anniversary celebrations, the forward/ladies’ tees were named the LIND tees. She proudly holds the family record with three hole-in-ones and multiple club championships.
Life was never quite the same aft er her dear Billy passed in 2012. In her later years, health challenges limited her mobility and independence. But at Humber Heights Long-Term Care, she was surrounded by exceptional caregivers who treated her with deep compassion and dignity—something for which we will always be grateful. Even aft er contracti ng COVID in 2020, she remained asymptomati c and carried on with grace and grit. As many of the staff oft en said, “She is one tough woman.”
Although there is great sadness with her passing, her quality of life in her final years was minimal. There is comfort in knowing that she is now with her Billy, with scotch in hand, Dad’s rum & coke in his, enjoying another epic sunset listening to “Song Sung Blue”.
In lieu of flowers, please do something kind for someone in need - both 2 and 4 legged! Her ashes will be laid to rest with Dad’s in the places they loved most, so they may remain with us always, in spirit and in sunshine.
