It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John (Charles or Charlie) Powell at the age of 73, on Friday 13th February 2026, at home.
Born in England on October 30th 1952 to Pam and John Powell. Devoted husband to Sally-Ann, proud father of John and Lewis, daughter-in-law Krystyna and grandfather to Preston and Amy. Survived by siblings Anne-Marie (Ian) and Mark (Judith).
Remembered for his dry humour, understated wit and infectious smile, along with his quiet tenacity and persistence in accomplishing his goals.
He emigrated to Canada, newly married, at the age of 23.
He was sponsored by the hotel owners of the Skyline Hotel at Toronto Airport, having worked at their Heathrow Airport hotel in London, England.
With unmatched work ethic, Charles quickly became the Comptroller, and with a new appreciation of the value of higher education, he obtained his CPA after 8 years of study whilst working and supporting a growing family.
He then went on to have a successful career in hotel and club management.
Always an athlete, he played squash until he required an early hip replacement at the age of 49, when he took up swimming as his primary activity. Quickly becoming a Scuba Diver and spending many vacations in beautiful locations. He never missed an opportunity to take a long swim in the lake or go on a hike. On one hike, he proudly managed to stop a charging moose in its tracks, although forever thankful, he always wondered why it stopped and turned away.
His love of Motorbikes began before his 16th birthday when he used all the money he had saved from his paper route to buy his first bike.
He took up golf when he was the manager of a golf club, an unexpected twist, and reached a reasonable level of expertise during his retirement.
He passed on his passion for reading to his grandchildren, who could often be found sitting on his lap for a Sunday afternoon story.
Charlie lived a life marked by service, dedication and loyalty. A gifted manager of people and accomplished mentor, he was loved and respected by colleagues, employees, friends and family. He is greatly missed.
A small family service was held.
