Died on January 14, 2014. She was 90 years old.
Born December 28, 1923 in Teddington, Middlesex, England, Jeanne was the third child of Thomas N.W. Woods and his wife Lilian A. Evans. Her two brothers died in infancy.
She was a teenager in Esher, Surrey, England, when World War II broke out. During the war she met a Canadian Major, John (Jack) A. Belford and married him in 1945. Shortly thereafter she came via ship as a war bride to Montreal, Quebec. She loved her new in-laws who lived in Ottawa. Canada became her home and she soon became a Canadian citizen. Jeanne loved to cook - it was her mother-in-law who introduced her to the joys of this past time. From the age of 4, Jeanne sewed and throughout her life made everything from children’s clothes to evening gowns and dinner jackets. She also re-upholstered much of her own furniture as well as making curtains for her house. She once said that had she been born in medieval times she could have spent her life on a tapestry. Throughout her life, she wished she had gone to university, so she decided to do it on her own and studied French and later, Latin.
She belonged to the Salon Français in Toronto which met once a month and worked for the Friends of Schizophrenics writing their news letters.
Whilst in Montreal she and Jack had two children, Glenys (Glen) Jane and John Alexander. John died in 2012. She is survived by her daughter, Glen, 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and her half-brother, Terence (Terry) Woods of Veryan, Cornwall, England.
Jeanne had the sweetest disposition and was loved by everyone who knew her. Her meeting Jack in London during the war, was the most exciting experience for either of them and the romance that began then, endured until Jack’s death in 2007.
