With sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Janet Benson on June 12, 2025, in her 94th year. Janet was born in 1931 to immigrant parents from Belfast, Ireland, and was raised in the Mount Dennis neighborhood of Toronto, where she grew up in a family of five children during a time of great hardship. Though the family had very little, their home was rich with love, resilience, and a strong sense of togetherness. These early experiences shaped Janet’s values. She worked for Shell Canada, where she built a steady and dedicated career before retiring over 40 years ago. Known for her thrifty nature, Janet lived simply and wisely throughout her life. She devoted herself to caring for her parents until their passing, showing unwavering love and dedication. Janet lived a quiet life, valuing hard work, perseverance, and routine, deeply loved by her extended family and friends. She never married and had no children of her own, but her heart of gold and deep devotion to family knew no bounds. She would do anything for those she loved. Quirky in nature, Janet’s unique personality brought a special warmth to everyone around her. For over 70 years, Janet attended York Community Church (Salvation Army), living a life that reflected her strong faith and belief in the Lord. She spent most of her time with her sister, Alice Junkins, and they both enjoyed tending to their garden—a pass time that brought them much joy and companionship. Janet was predeceased by her parents, Alice and Robert Benson; her siblings, Ellen Conti (Gilbert), Alan Benson (Winnie), and Robert Benson Jr.; and her brother-in-law, Wesley Junkins. She is survived by her sister, Alice Junkins, and by her many nieces and nephews, who will cherish her memory. A special thank you to the staff at Winbourne Park LTC, who were so kind and caring, sharing laughter and fun with Janet on a daily basis. A service to celebrate Janet’s life will be held on June 19th 10:30 at Ward Funeral Home – Weston Chapel, 2035 Weston Road, Toronto (416) 241-4618.
Those wishing to honor Janet's memory may consider a donation to the York Community Church (Salvation Army) 1100 Weston Rd Toronto (416) 766-1361. I just supported The Salvation Army!
