Iride Pichini

With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and treasured matriarch, Iride Pichini (nee Petrucci), on June 3rd, 2025, at the age of 95.

Born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1929, in Trisungo, a small village on the border of Le Marche and Umbria in the Apennine Mountains of Italy, Iride was the third of ten children born to Pietro Petrucci and Luigina Angelucci. Raised in a humble peasant family during the Great Depression amidst the austerity and devastation of post–World War I and the further upheavals of World War 2, Iride grew up with little in material wealth but rich in the values that defined her life—faith and family.

A proud and principled woman, Iride dedicated herself to teaching and leading by example. She was a respected community leader and worked tirelessly in service of her community and her church. She loved to sing, and her voice, both strong and tender, brought comfort and joy to all who heard it.

On June 9, 1951, she married her beloved Olimpio. Together they shared a life of devotion, hard work, and sacrifice. In September 1960, they immigrated to Canada with their three Italian-born children, later welcoming a fourth child in their new homeland. Despite the many challenges of immigration, language barriers, and building a life from the ground up, Iride and Olimpio worked side by side to provide for their family and create a better future.

Tragically, on March 11, 1986, Iride lost her beloved Olimpio. Though heartbroken, she carried on with courage and strength, always finding purpose in her family and her work.

One of Iride’s many gifts was her extraordinary talent in the kitchen. A master of the culinary arts and simple, rustic cuisine, she could take just three or four humble ingredients and turn them into gourmet meals that nourished both body and soul. Her table was a place of gathering, laughter, and love. From handmade pasta to hearty soups and Olive Ascolane, from delicate pastries and cakes to robust sauces, her cooking was a reflection of her spirit—warm, generous, full of goodness and full of heart.

She leaves behind her devoted children: Giulia (Carmine), Joseph (Elisa), Peter (Franca), and Lia (Gerard). She will be forever remembered by her 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews around the world, each of whom is shaken by her passing but will certainly carry her legacy forward. It is indeed true that when a great tree falls, it leaves a big void, and the whole forest shakes.

To her family, she was the center of everything—our matriarch, our example, our pillar, our strength. Her faith, her food, her song, and her love defined who she was and how she will be remembered.

Con immenso dolore ma con profonda gratitudine per una vita vissuta con amore, annunciamo la scomparsa della nostra amata madre, nonna, bisnonna, zia, sorella e insostituibile matriarca, Iride Pichini (née Petrucci), avvenuta serenamente oggi, 3 giugno, 2025, all’età di 95 anni.

Nata il giorno di Natale, il 25 dicembre 1929 a Trisungo, un piccolo paese disperso nelle montagne del Piceno tra le Marche e l'Umbria in Italia, Iride era la terza di dieci figli nati da Pietro Petrucci e Luigina Angelucci. Cresciuta in una famiglia contadina durante la tremenda austerità della grande depressione ed i tempi turbolenti del dopoguerra e della Seconda guerra mondiale, Iride imparò presto il valore del sacrificio, della fede e della famiglia - princìpi che hanno guidato ogni momento della sua vita.

Donna orgogliosa e di grande dignità, dedicò parte della sua giovinezza all'insegnamento dei bambini e fu un punto di riferimento nella comunità trisungana come insegnante di scuola, insegnante di dottrina, Presidente dell'Azione Cattolica, servendo la Chiesa, la sua comunità e gli altri con passione e generosità. Amava cantare, e il suo canto - dolce e forte al tempo stesso - riempiva la casa di gioia e di speranza.

Il 9 giugno 1951 sposò l'amore della sua vita, Olimpio, con il quale condivise un legame profondo e indissolubile. Nel settembre del 1960, con coraggio e speranza, emigrarono in Canada con i loro tre figli nati in Italia, accogliendo poi una quarta figlia nella nuova patria. Affrontarono insieme le difficoltà dell'immigrazione, la barriera linguistica e le sfide economiche, lavorando instancabilmente per garantire alla loro famiglia una vita migliore.

L'11 marzo 1986, Iride affrontò la dolorosa perdita del suo amato Olimpio. Sebbene profondamente addolorata, trovò la forza di andare avanti, mantenendo viva la memoria del loro amore attraverso il suo esempio di resilienza e dedizione.

Uno dei doni più ammirati di Iride era la sua abilità in cucina. Con pochi ingredienti semplici, era capace di creare piatti straordinari, pieni di sapore, amore e tradizione. La sua cucina era un’estensione del suo cuore: nutriva non solo il corpo, ma anche l’anima. Attorno alla sua tavola si condividevano risate, storie, preghiere e tanto amore.

Iride lascia nel dolore ma con gratitudine i suoi figli: Giulia (Carmine), Joseph (Elisa), Peter (Franca) e Lia (Gerry); suoi fratelli e sorelle Carlo (Clara), Pina (Giuseppe), Virgilio (Lida), e Matilde. Rimarrà per sempre nel cuore dei suoi diretti 10 nipoti e 10 pronipoti, e tantissimi altri nipoti e pronipoti che sentono la sua mancanza e continueranno a portare avanti i suoi insegnamenti, il suo spirito e la sua eredità d’amore. Quando un grande albero cade lascia un grande vuoto e tutta la foresta trema.

Per tutti noi, Iride è stata molto più di una madre o di una nonna o di una zia - è stata la colonna della nostra famiglia, la nostra guida, la nostra luce. La sua fede incrollabile, le sue canzoni, la sua cucina e il suo amore rimarranno con noi per sempre.

Riposa in pace, cara Mamma. Nonna, bisnonna, sorella e Zia. Solo chi non lascia eredita d’affetti, poca gioia ha dell’urna, e tu ci hai lasciato un’eredità di valori profondi e un amore che continuerà a vivere in ogni gesto, in ogni preghiera e in ogni piatto condiviso attorno alla tavola di famiglia.

Family and friends will be received at the Ward Funeral Home on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. David's Parish (2601 Major MacKenzie Drive West, Maple) on Monday June 9th at 9:30 a.m. Entombment to follow at Glendale Memorial Gardens.
