Brampton Lawyer for 41 years
Passed away suddenly while on vacation in Florida on Friday, March 9, 2012 in his 77th year. Devoted husband and best friend of Sheila for 48 years. Wonderful father to Heather of Oakville, Suzanne (Mauro) of Darien, CT and Rory of Brampton. Predeceased by beloved son Neil in 1988. Proud grandfather of Marshall, Austin and Madison.
Born October 9, 1935 in Donkin, NS, to Robert and Sarah “Sadie” (McRae) Matheson. Holmes received a B.A. from Acadia University in 1958 and a L.L.B from Dalhousie Law School in 1961. He was a member of the University Naval Training Division of the Royal Canadian Navy from 1956 to 1961.
Holmes was admitted to the Nova Scotia Barristers Society in 1962. He practiced law in Halifax until 1965 when he moved to Ontario, and was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1966. He practiced law with two firms before opening up his own practice in Brampton, ON, in 1970. He was a longstanding member of the Brampton Golf Club (squash player) and former member of the Kinsmen Club of Brampton.
For 50 years, he served his clients in a down-to-earth and personable manner. He lived a life that fairly balanced career and family. His storytelling flowed with an ease that inspired and his humour was infectious.
In addition to his loving wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his twin brother Grant (Nancy) of Collingwood; sisters, Margaret (Garry) Wilcox of Oil City, ON and Rodena MacLean of Glace Bay, NS; and numerous nieces and nephews. Holmes was predeceased by his brothers, Robert “Buddy”, and William “Willie”; and sisters, Ellen MacDougall and Georgie MacDonald.
Friends will be received at Wards Funeral Home, 52 Main Street South, Brampton on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
