Enrique Julia-Franco

Enrique (Henry) Oscar Julia-Franco died on Saturday, January 16, 2016 in his 82nd year at Chester Village Long Term Care Home in Toronto, Ontario.

He is survived by his four children: Diana, Allan, Eric and Sonya; by his grandchildren: Danielle, Jasmine, Alex, Lucy and Milo, by his brother, Hector and his wife Marlies, by his sons in law, Kevin von Appen and Aaron Barnett, and by his daughter in law, Mary Jane O’Reilly.

Henry is also survived by the love and memories he inspired – the work he did so carefully, the risks he took, his joys and his sorrows, too.

Born on July 29, 1934 in Sante Fe, Argentina, Henry left in 1963 with the great love who defined his life, Irma Susana Nuñez (d. July 11, 2001). He built his life and family in Toronto - from early days and late nights as a maitre d’ at Inn on the Park, to installing security systems for Chubb Inc. to the sunny rewards of a six-year tenure in Bermuda for the Bank of Butterfield, self-taught computing, and the entrepreneurial creation of OHM Security with partner Maurice Daoust when he returned to Canada. His work brought Susana and his children the gifts of home and education. In all this, Henry did his best and did it well.

But that’s not what we who loved Henry will think of most when we remember him. We remember courtly manners and unfailing courtesy with strangers. We remember liquid, beautiful whistling to his beloved Beethoven. We remember his pressed, short-sleeved shirts with multiple pens in the breast pocket, neat handwriting, detailed files. We remember rum and coke and cheese and crackers (which doubled as his favorite expletive). We remember teasing and jokes and laughter. We remember him looking at the stars through a telescope, discussing cosmology and humanity’s place in the universe. (In Henry’s opinion, it was uncertain, at best).

And we remember the pain of his broken heart, confusion, and failing memory following the death of Susana, a pain that at last has blessedly ended. Henry will be mourned by his dear friend Peggy Ying and by his family. We’ll do our best to ensure he’ll be honored by our lives.

As per Henry's wishes, a graveside, and brief, ceremony will take place at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 22nd at Spring Creek Cemetery, 1390 Clarkson Road, in Mississauga.
