Donald “The Don” Hammond
Mayor of Unionville
June 19, 1934 – August 11, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald “The Don” Hammond, age 91, on August 11, 2025. Don was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marlene, and will be deeply missed by his daughter Christine (John), grandchildren Austin (Iris), Tristan (Ashley), and his cherished great-grandson Aldo. He will also be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends and his close friends who became part of his family, whose lives he touched with his infectious personality and passion for life. Born and raised in Scarborough, Don was a man of many adventures. His parents, Percy and Margaret, and his siblings, Bill, Ted, and Pearl, were often left wondering what his next big venture would be. Whether it was raising horses, running a dry-cleaning business, or selling eggs from his chickens, Don’s entrepreneurial spirit was always on the move. Ultimately, Don found his true passion in the upholstery business, where he became a well-known and respected figure in the Unionville community. In addition to his business acumen, Don had a variety of passions that defined his life. He loved rebuilding old cars from scratch, a hobby that kept him busy for many years. His love of fundraising and his gift for storytelling were also legendary—Don was a master of tales and could always be found with a new story to share, captivating anyone who would listen. His humor, wisdom, and unique perspectives on life will be missed by all. . A Celebration of Life for Don will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, 1-4pm at the Victoria Square Community Centre,2929 Elgin Mills Rd E. Markham, ON L6C 1K8. We invite family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Don to join us in sharing stories, laughter, and continuing the “novel” of extraordinary adventures that he began. And in honour of Don, we request everyone wear a Hawaiian shirt or bright colours!
