On February 20, 1933 Domenico Cozzi the son of Giuseppe and Rosa Cozzi was born in Modugno, Bari, Italy. He grew up with brother Rocco (Nicoletta) and sister Chiara (Nicola). He spent his youth on the family farms where he cultivated his passion for agriculture. As a young man he joined the Italian Army and travelled throughout Italy. He was promoted to Corporal where he became a role model for the younger soldiers and was instrumental in the training program for them.
Domenico (Mingu) met the love of his life, Rosa (Rosetta) in Italy and was invited by her to begin a new life together in Canada. They were wed on June 18, 1960 at St. Peter's Church in Toronto. They were inseparable for 62 years (22,493 days). Devoted Husband to Rosa and a dedicated caring Father to Rosa (Joe), Angela (Trevor) and Josie (Todd). He was a loving treasured Nonno to Annemarie (Alberto), Luca, Biagio, Domenico, Bisnonno Michael, and fur grandbabies Chanel and Muskoka.
Back in 1966, Domenico and Rosa took the first steps towards building their family business - Tyrrel Grocery. It didn’t take long for Tyrrel Grocery to become a beloved fixture in the community, serving as a gathering place for neighbors. The store earned fame with it’s signature sandwich “Domwich”. This inspired the publishing of "Our Corner Grocery Store" a children's book written about a day in the life of Domenico and Rosa seen through the eyes of their granddaughter Annemarie.
Guided by his devotion to faith, Domenico and the community were influential in founding St. Bruno’s Catholic School - a legacy cherished with gratitude across generations. Throughout the years, Tyrrel Grocery celebrated many milestones hand in hand with neighbors from every generation. In recognition of the Cozzi family’s valued contributions, in 2015 the community proposed naming the laneway on Tyrrel Avenue “Dom’s Lane”.
On Saturday December 13, 2025 (St. Lucia), sadly our beloved Domenico - Husband, Father, Nonno, Bisnonno passed away peacefully. He is reunited with the love of his life Rosa.
Domenico touched many lives with his big heart, passion for life and generosity. He will be dearly remembered by all who loved and admired him. We will cherish the beautiful memories in our hearts forever. Papa, Nonno, Bisnonno, you will truly be missed. We love you.
