Derek Funnell

Owen Derek Funnell
December 29, 1947 – January 26, 2012
Oakville, Ontario

With extreme sadness, we announce Derek’s sudden yet peaceful passing. Derek was born in Winnipeg, and was predeceased by his loving parents Owen and Jean Funnell.

Derek holds a unique place in the hearts of so many people. Derek was encouraging, and lived his life full of optimism. He was loyal, honest, sensitive, loving, supportive, and interested in others. A ready smile, a quick joke, a hearty laugh. Derek was constantly looking for ways to be of service to others.

With so many of their dreams left unfulfilled, Derek leaves his “bride” and his soul-mate Darlene (Orser). Also survived by his loving sisters Lynn Pady and Sandy Gregg, his very special mother-in-law Marion Orser (the late Earl Orser). Brother-in-law and friend to Barbara Orser and Allan Riding; Beverley Orser and Geordie Fallis; Nancy and George Hart. Beloved uncle and Doo Dah to Ian Pady; Bryan Pady (Heather Nobes); Kate (Karl) McBee; Seth (Laura) Gregg; Kevin,Becky and Sarah Fallis; Michael and Amanda Grant Orser; Emma and Chloe Hart; and great uncle to Owen Pady.

Derek was a committed volunteer with Fareshare Food Bank Oakville, and The Arthritis Society. He was the “Mayor” of the street, and he loved the neighbourhood. Derek was Commissioner of the Monday Night Hockey League, an evening he held sacred for more than 35 years. Whether golfing, kayaking, skiing, biking, or traveling off the beaten path, Derek was in his element. Later in life, numerous ocean kayaking trips provided spectacular new experiences for him and Dar. Derek was highly regarded in the business world, from his early days in the sporting goods industry, through to his recent retirement as Vice-President Fabricated Products with MTI. Known for his sense of humour, Derek was respected for his integrity, acumen, incredible people skills, and thoughtfulness.
