Sadly, we announce the death of our mother, our grandmother, our sister, our friend, Carol Ann West. The daughter of Robert John West and Marion Margaret West (nee Carr), Carol was born in Mt. Dennis on the 19th of January, 1939 and passed peacefully on May 11, 2025.
Carol will be remembered for her many talents.
As a musician she sang with the Elmer Isler Singers, Festival Singers, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, as a section lead at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, Lawrence Park Community Church, and St. James Church, Orillia. She conducted the Choir for Seniors in Weston, ON as well as the choir of First Presbyterian Church in Penetang. She also won Kiwanis Festival Competitions – too many years in a row she was told! – in Timmins. As a singing clown she brought joy to many. Most people were unaware of her skill as a composer of hymns and church anthems which remain a testament to her faith.
She loved to create beautiful works of art and spent many happy hours with paints, camera, paper mache, crochet hook, card stock and glue and any other materials she could find. She wrote volumes of poetry and was an avid reader of L.M. Montgomery and Gene Stratton-Porter. Favorite outings were rock-hunting with brother Bruce. Their collections are notorious.
Carol is predeceased by her husband Dirk de Boer (d. 2002, Penetang). She leaves her children David Greer (Melissa), Malcolm Greer (Regan), Linda O’Leary (Kevin), and John Greer (Bonnie), younger siblings, Bruce (the late Hilda West), Betty (Gary Wagner), and Paul (Karin), and their children. Her grandchildren, Adrian Greer, Kyle Greer (predeceased), Miya McLeod, Jared Ostertag, Cadence Greer, Krista Carol Greer, Savannah O’Leary, Trevor O’Leary, and Russell Greer will all remember her gentleness, her pride in their accomplishments, her encouragement.
Guests will be received at Ward’s Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Rd., Toronto, ON, M9N 1X7, 416-241-4618, on Tuesday, May 20. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon followed by a service at 1:00. The interment will take place immediately afterward at St. Philips’ Cemetery and a reception back at Ward’s will follow.
The Maplewood LTC has been Carol’s home for five years following hospitalization for a stroke that left her non-ambulatory. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff at the Maplewood for their excellent care, genuine compassion, positivity and professionalism throughout the Covid lockdown and since “normal” conditions have returned. She grew to love you all. We are grateful.
In Carol's memory, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
