Carmel "Lino" Buhagiar

Carmel "Lino" Buhagiar passed away peacefully in Toronto on Thursday, May 15th at the age of 91. He was born in Malta, July 25, 1933, to Antonia (Nina) and Paul Buhagiar. Lino is survived by his step-daughter Stacey Burnett, cousins Doris, Lino, Susan and Louise Spiteri as well as his nephews Christian, Lawrence and Paul Buhagiar and niece Carmen Smale. He was predeceased by his parents, Antonia (Nina) and Paul Buhagiar, his loving wife Miranda Buhagiar, and dear brothers Joseph, Frank, Jack and John Buhagiar. Lino, whether he was a son, brother, husband, stepfather, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin or friend, was a very special man to each one of us. Lino will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and sense of humour. He had a successful career at Canada Post and the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. He had the best stories about the things people tried to smuggle into Canada, and even met the Rolling Stones when they visited Canada. He used to drive a red Volkswagen Beetle and would replace the old one with another red Beetle, never telling anyone it was new. He enjoyed driving and frequent trips to Arizona. Lino was an active member of the parish community at St. John the Evangelist church, and acted as a Eucharistic Minister. Lino enjoyed many hobbies, including cutting precious gemstones, collecting maps of Malta and historic books. He was an avid reader and fluent in five languages. He battled Alzheimer's disease for several years and was resilient throughout, finding happiness in the small things in life. The family would like to thank Villa Colombo Homes for the Aged for their care and support.
