Bessie Spanos

Bessie Spanos  January 29, 1938 - September 21, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bessie Spanos on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 88. 

Born in Komi, Greece, Bessie came to Canada in 1956 and built a life defined by courage, faith, hard work, and determination. She worked for many years as a waitress, teaching herself English, and never allowed obstacles to stand in her way.

 Strong-minded, resourceful, and persistent, Bessie always found a way forward. She was the beloved wife of the late Demetre, who passed away in January, a devoted mother to Roula (Jim) and Helen (Loui), and a loving grandmother to Chris, George, and James. 

Caring for her family brought her great joy and happiness. She expressed her love through generosity and care, especially through her cooking. Her moussaka, kourabiethes, and beeftekia were treasured favourites among her family and friends, and she was happiest when everyone was well fed and cared for. 

Throughout her life, Bessie faced many health challenges, including several battles with cancer. Small in stature but enormous in spirit, she was a true fighter. Her courage, resilience, and faith carried her through countless difficult moments. Perhaps part of her purpose was to bear witness to the resilience God provides, showing us all that we can find the strength to keep going, no matter how hard the road may be. 

Bessie's final illness came suddenly. While her family is deeply saddened, they take great comfort in the hope that she was welcomed home by the loved ones who had gone before her. After a lifetime of fighting, she can finally rest —free from pain and surrounded by eternal love. Her family and friends will remember her strength, her generosity, her endless questions, her unwavering determination, her wonderful cooking, and all the little things that made her uniquely Bessie. She never stopped finding a way forward. Her fierce spirit and generous heart will live on in all those she loved so deeply.  May she rest in peace. We love you, we miss you, and we will carry you in our hearts always.
