Alexandra (Aleka) Tsianos

In Loving Memory of Alexandra (Aleka) Tsianos

Aleka was a beloved mother to Terry and Olga, a devoted grandmother to Alexandra (Lex) and Amanda, and a great-grandmother to Kalisto. She was also cherished by the dog she “never” wanted, Tucker, also known as “koulouri mou.” Aleka was a caring sister to her five siblings - Dafnoula, Mihali, Andrea, Voula, and Fotini. Although many miles separated them, her siblings, parents, nieces, nephews, and cousins remained a central part of her life. They were a close-knit family, and she loved them deeply.

Aleka embodied courage and resilience, qualities she demonstrated in many ways. One of her earliest acts of bravery was becoming the first in her family to leave her homeland, Greece, and immigrate to Canada in pursuit of opportunity and new adventures. It was here she met her then husband, Costa with whom she shared their children and years of joy and prosperity. She carried with her hope and determination, laying the groundwork for brighter possibilities for herself and for her family, both by blood and by choice. Aleka was a strong-willed woman who was ahead of her time in her independence and autonomy, forging her own path in life with love, care and resolve.

She dedicated decades of her life caring for her community at the Hellenic Home, touching countless lives along the way. Whether someone needed a ride to the supermarket or a doctor’s appointment, a morning wellness check, help with daily meals, or assistance with any task, Aleka was always there. Her love language was, in fact, acts of service.

In her final years, Aleka faced progressive dementia. She resided in a nursing home supported by wonderful caregivers who showed the same commitment to care that she had given throughout her life, alongside the continued support of her children and family, who surrounded her with patience and tenderness.

Music and dance were her refuge. Whenever Greek music filled the room, she danced with her whole heart, embodying a freedom of movement many aspire to attain. Even as her sight faded and her body weakened, she would dance in her chair, reminding us of the joy she found in rhythm, lyrics, and memories of shared experiences. She could find a moment in any part of the day to “glenti”. Though her path with dementia required many hands and hearts to support her, her courage and wonderfully twisted sense of humour remained central to who she was.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Nesbitt Lodge; we could not have cared for our mother without you. Her memory lives on in the music she loved, the dances she shared, and the countless acts of love that carried her through her life.

We will miss you.
