Mercedes Baker

Baker, Mercedes
“Ba Ba” “Bobs”
Born in Aldershot, Surrey, UK, October 7, 1916, passed away in Brampton Ontario, on January 3, 2015 at the age of 98, of natural causes.
Daughter of the late Valentine & Eva d’Anacker, she leaves to mourn her passing, her sons Mark Baker of Brampton and his wife Vicki and Guy Baker of Brooklin and his wife Maggie; and her Grandchildren Sean (Heather), Sonja (Brad), Katy (Erik) and Ali (Mike); and her Great-grandchildren, Riley, Brooke, Willow and Quinn. Also step Granddaughters Shelagh (Cory) and Kristen (Marco) and step Great-grandson, Riker, and Dene Cousins. Her husband, Court Baker predeceased her July 17, 1998.
“Ba Ba” as she was known in the UK, took up flying when she was 19, at Brooklands Flying Club and became an accomplished pilot. During WWII she collected aluminum pots and pans, to help the war effort, joined the ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary), was part of the Home Guard, and drove an ambulance. Then she met the love of her life, Court. She had the courage to marry a Canadian and emigrate to Canada, leaving her family, friends and way of life behind.
“Bobs” as she was known in Canada, arrived on March 26, 1946 at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS and settled in Yarmouth NS. She was generous with her time: with church groups, flower arranging, prison visitations. She was a painter, a caregiver, a confidant, a devotee of causes, a passionate gardener, and loved singing in choirs. Bobs was a vibrant personality, who touched many peoples’ lives and was active until her 98th year.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and thrilled to have four great granddaughters! She is now reunited with her "Bowen", our Dad. You are missed already!
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 26th with visitation at 10:00 am, and the service to follow at 11:00 am at Ward Funeral Home, 52 Main Street South, Brampton. A reception will follow at the home of Mark & Vicki Baker and Dene Cousins, 28 Cheltenham Crt. Brampton.
Donations in lieu of flowers should go to the charity of your choice. A special “Thank you” goes out to all the hard-working PSWs and nurses who cheerfully go about their special work, with such kindness. You are such a comfort.
